Sigma 135-400mm Test : Sigma 135-400mm lens test on Olympus E1. All images shot RAW, with tripod, then developed with Olympus Viewer software. Camera settings were basically on the neutral ("0") settings. Each exposure was adjusted slightly (+0.3 to +0.7), contrast increased and sharpness increased via the conversion. The subject of each photograph is approximately 1/3 to 1/2 mile from the camera location.

Early Snow East Fork Mink Creek : Heavy early snowfall on October 6, 2007, allowed for rare snowshoe activity on the East Fork of Mink Creek Trail. The trail is located on the slopes of Scout Mountain (elev 8700 feet) near Pocatello, ID. It's a well-used trail by hikers, mountain bikers, horsepackers, & 4-wheelers during spring, summer, & fall, but the road to the trailhead closes on Nov 15 each year. The pictures here show the trailhead parking area (elev 6600 ft) a bridge over one of the mountain tributaries of the East Fork of Mink Creek (0.9 mile up the trail), and the junction with Valve House Trail (at 1.2 miles at 7000 ft elev).

The Golf Links of Iona : Links golf at its finest! Not world renowned by any means, but free. The Iona Golf Course is located on common land on the western side of the Isle of Iona in the Scottish Hebrides. Village folk occasionally mow the greens; the fairways and fertilization kept up to snuff by grazing sheep. Their deposits, of course, give a real depth of meaning to "play it as it lies!"

Pocatello City Track Meet : A cold, blustery May 3rd, 2007, in Pocatello, Idaho, on the campus of Idaho State University. The city staged its middle school city-wide track meet & I managed to observe about 1 hour of the events. The photos were taken with my Olympus E1 and either the OM 300mm f4.5 lens (at f5.6) or with the DZ 40-150mm f3.5-f4.5 (at f5.6). The events primarily were heats of the the 1500 meter run and the girls 4x400 meter relay.

A Yellowstone Day : Was traveling through Yellowstone Park on the way to Pocatelleo, Idaho, after a business trip to Cody, Wyoming. The Park routes provide the shortest & fastest way between the two towns (about 300 miles apart). It had snowed overnight, but the rest of the day was cloudy and overcast. Still, some good photo opportunities. The images in this gallery were taken with an Olympus E1, with 14-54mm digital Zuiko, 40-150mm digital Zuiko, 200mm OM, 300mm OM, and 600mm Sigma lenses.

Fort Hall Festival Children's Pony Race : The children's pony race on August 11, 2006, at the Annual Fort Hall Shoshone-Bannock Tribes Festival. The ponies have to be 50" or less; the children in this race were 7-12 years old. I think the oldest boy actually ended up winning, but only because the young girl and younger boy pulled off the course at the turn heading down the homestretch. The little boy and his pony certainly won the first two furlongs!

Indian Relay Races 11 Aug 2006 : The Indian Relay race uses teams consisting of riders, holders, and 3 horses. At the start, the designated rider of each team gallops around the mile-long (?) track, then at the end of the first lap, dashes to a holder. The rider then quickly dismounts and remounts a fresh horse for another lap. The exchange takes place a 2nd time for the third and deciding lap. This gallery shows a selection of photos from the two heats that were held on this date--All part of the 42nd Annual Fort Hall Shoshone Bannock Tribes Festival and Powwow!

Tiny Tots Powwow Dancing 11 Aug 2006 : The Annual Fort Hall (Idaho) Shoshone-Bannock Tribes Festival takes place in August (for 2006, Aug 10-13). On Friday, vents at the Powwow arbor focused on the youth of Indian Country, with selections for the Festival Princesses and family and youth dancing. These photos show a few of the "tiny tots" who perhaps are dancing at their very first powwow. Family members participate and encourage these youngsters to dance and celebrate American Indian traditions.

Fort Hall Replica--Pocatello, ID : The city of Pocatello maintains a replica of the Fort Hall Trading Post (established c. 1843) on the grounds of Upper Ross Park, near the Bannock County Museum. Near the replica is new construction of a replica of the early Pocatello townsite, c. 1880-1910. The original Fort Hall is located about 8 miles north of Pocatello, near the "bottoms" of the Snake River as it goes through the Fort Hall Shoshone-Bannock Indian Reservation. Little is left of the original site, which was more-or-less bypassed by the construction of the Union Pacific Railroad in 1869. All photos taken with Olympus E-1 and digital Zuiko 40-150mm lens.
